Why do limited edition sculptures for the garden and home have such a high value? Not only are bronze garden sculptures strong and durable providing lasting beauty, but they offer the person joy throughout the seasons. Limited edition bronze sculptures are confined to a set number of castings, as defined by the sculptor. Larger, life-sized sculptures typically have a lower edition number that smaller sculptures purchased for the home interior.
The high market value can be attributed to many factors. First, the sculptor has his or her own time invested in researching the subject matter, deciding upon a composition, and the endless hours of sculpting the original in clay or wax. Second, once the actual sculpting is completed, the actual costs to the sculptor increase substantially.
Depending upon how much work the sculptor actually does in completing the sculpture from making the rubber mold, pouring the wax from the mold, and wax chasing (taking imperfections out of the wax with chasing tools) is directly related to costs accrued to the sculptor. Next, the wax goes to the foundry for casting. Once the wax to bronze process is complete at the foundry, the sculptor may once again choose to do welding, metal finishing (metal chasing), and the patination (chemical coloration) of the bronze sculpture to save the additional costs of these services.
This very detailed and long process of casting using the “lost wax” method, can in no way be rushed or altered but takes time and many hours to complete. This is why limited edition bronze sculptures have a high market value to the consumer and why owning bronzes can be one of the most enjoyable parts of a garden or home interior.
