Every home design reflects the personality and taste of each individual and family, whether your niche is a ten-acre wooded lot or a quaint neighborhood with lots of children.  You may prefer a remote location rather than an area that is easily accessible.  Compile a list of vital site features for your dream home, neighborhood, and the surrounding area.  Considerations may include ample slope for a walk-out basement or a level yard for a swimming pool.  Explore the areas until you find the ultimate site for your new home.

Orient you dream home to frame the fantastic views and buffer the less desirable ones.  You decide whether you prefer the morning sunlight to brighten the Breakfast Nook or the Master Bedroom Suite.  Other important factors include solar benefits, slope of the land and winter winds.

When designing your dream home, consider your lifestyle.  For example, open plans create magnificent entertaining areas.  Small spaces are intimate and personal.  Your Kitchen, the hub of activity, demands a prominent position, whereas a remote location may be favorable for a Home Office.  Personal preference dictates whether your Bedrooms are clustered together or separate.  A Theatre Room, Wine Cellar or Hobby Room may also meet your needs.

Also, by choosing your spaces wisely you will find what is required to fulfill your daily needs.  Maybe a cozy fireplace, an elegant Master Bedroom Suite, or a bright, cheery Sunroom will compliment your lifestyle.  Other interesting features such as a cathedral ceiling, a soft-lit coffered ceiling, a built-in niche, a quaint reading nook surrounded by bookshelves, or an extravagant Kitchen for gourmet cooking may be of interest to you.  Collect photos of exciting spaces and maybe start a scrapbook to help you along the way.

The same goes for you exterior style. You choose the style you want.  Craftsman, Victoria, Country French, Tudor, Contemporary, the possibilities are endless! To add a little character, combine finishes such as brick and stone or cedar shake and horizontal siding.  A porch, deck or terrace will enhance your outdoor living experience while adding personality and style.  Attention to detail increases curb appeal!
