Daylilies are a staple of the experienced gardener’s arsenal. Bright and prolific, these bulbs can really brighten any garden space. Here are some tips for healthy daylilies:
1. Planting times are faily flexible; spring, late summer and early fall are all ideal.
2. Mix varieties with different blooming seasons in the same bed for constant color.
3. Divide every 3 or 4 years to keep the plants from overcrowding. You can plant divided daylilies in other parts of your garden, or pass along to friends. Make sure your divided plant has roots and at least one spray of foliage.
4. Most varieties are happy in full sun, but will also thrive in partial shade or afternoon shade.
5. If you live in a colder zone, provide extra insulation for your lilies by laying down mulch over the frozen soil.
6. Keep pests at bay with medium-spray water rinses or insecticidal soap.
7. Space daylilies apart at least 18 to 24 inches. You’ll have the best success in well-drained, fertile soil.
8. Use daylilies around trees as an attractive ground cover. They may take longer to establish, though, as they are sharing water and nutrients with the tree.
