If you are fortunate to have a pond or water feature in your yard (or plan to install one in the future), here are some plants that will make the most of your aquatic space:
Grasses: Look for ornamental grasses that will sway with the wind. Grasses provide contrast with the flatter plants that grow on the water surface. You can use very tall grass to accent a waterfall, or use shorter varieties to liven up the edges of a more static waterspace, such as a pond.
Bulbs: Certain lilies and cannas thrive in waterside conditions. These provide height and color, as well as interesting shapes, to your waterscape.
Ferns: A staple of water-based landscapes in the wild, adding feathery fronds of marsh or maidenhair ferns will evoke a classic and natural look.
Shrubs: Shrubs, in dwarf varieties, can lend structure to a water feature. Also, some varieties have colorful berries or striking flowers, adding texture and color to the landscape.
Marginals: These are plants that thrive in shallow water, and bring height and color to the edges of a pond. They grow quickly, so you might find cultivating them in pots will allow you to control growth better and prevent your marginals from taking over your waterscape.
Consult with your landscaper or local nursery for the best selections for your zone and particular water feature. In no time, you’ll turn a pond or waterfall into a lush focal point for your landscape.
