Whether you live in a desert climate or just want to conserve water, here are some tips to help you create water-efficient beds and borders:
Plan before planting. Create high, moderate and low water use zones and group your plants accordingly.
Select the right plants for a drought climate. Also, be sure to plant when rainfall is expected.
Reduce the size of your lawn. Replace traditional turf grass with native grasses, groundcovers, and low maintenance perennials.
Mow your lawn higher and less often. Set your mower blade to at least 3 inches and keep the blade sharp; dull blades can increase water loss.
Mulch. Mulch limits soil erosion, inhibits weed growth, and of course, helps beds retain water.
Irrigate efficiently. Use soaker hoses. Don’t overwater, and to decrease evaporation, don’t water after 10 AM or on windy days.
Capture rain and snow runoff. Use rain barrels, downspouts, and cisterns, and divert runoff into beds and borders.
