Always start at the back of the bed or border, working toward the front. This helps you avoid stepping on plants you’ve just planted. Try not to sit, step or kneel on the prepared soil; this would compact it, undoing all your preparation.

A trowel should be used to create holes in your soil for seeds or seedlings. Refer to the seed packet for instructions on planting depth. Your seedling holes should be twice the size of the root ball. Place the seeding in the hole to see where the crown (where the stem meets the root ball) sits relative to the topsoil surface. If necessary, add more dirt or subtract some so that the seedling crown is level with the topsoil. Lightly tamp down the soil over the root ball using your hands or trowel.

Water your seeds and seedlings, and get ready to enjoy your newly planted bed.
