Are you looking to grow or display eye-catching blue flowers? If you are, you can’t go wrong with blue orchids. But what makes blue orchids so special? The answer is pretty obvious: their striking blue color.

White, purple, red and yellow are quite common orchid colors, and blue flowered orchids such as the Vanda coerulea are extremely rare. In fact, orchids belonging in the genus Vanda (particularly Vanda coerulea) are endangered because their natural habitats are being destroyed. Worldwide, it is actually illegal to export wild-collected the blue orchids Vanda coerulea as well as other wild Vanda orchids.

In the horticulture trade, Vanda orchids produce some of the most beautiful and magnificent orchid flowers. This has prompted many orchid growers and hybridists to produce varieties of blue flowered Vanda orchids for the cut flower industry.

Their brilliant blue color is what makes the Vanda coerulea species such rare orchids. Blue, particularly sky blue, flowers are a rarity in nature. The fact that blue orchids are hard to come by and hard to grow is the reason they come with a dear price tag.

The combination of rarity and beauty commands a substantial price be paid for these gorgeous flowers. You can find other orchids that are in varying shades of blue, but many of these are hybrids. Blue is a rare color and it is in high demand, so many breeders have hybridized easier to grow orchids so that they exhibit a blue coloration.

Overall, the beauty of the blue orchids such as Vanda coerulea cannot compare to other orchids. Brilliant sky blue petals are a feast for the eyes. This is one species that orchid growers and orchid lovers will want to grow.
