Shrubs are sold in several ways. Container-grown is most common, but they also are sold in burlap, bare-root, or containerized.
It’s important that you inspect the root system to make sure it is well-developed. If the plant is containerized, support the plant at the top of the roots, invert it, and remove the pot. If soil mix falls away, the root system is likely poorly developed.
The roots should be firm, healthy, and have white tips. They should not be congested; that indicates that the plant is pot-bound. Also, check the soil mix for algae and liverwort; either indicates that the plant has been in the container for too long.
The stem should have plenty of foliage, and both stem and foliage should be healthy and evenly distributed.
