When some people think of a home garden, they envision a huge, smooth lawn, accented with trees and lovely bed and borders. However, for many of us the garden is a concrete or paved area without soil in sight.

A determined gardener should not be deterred in the least by a lack of conventional growing space. You can have a year-round garden, producing ornamental as well as edible plants by making best use of the space you have available.

In addition to filling all usable horizontal space with color and greens, you should make use of vertical areas to cover unattractive walls and fences. Use appealing climbing plants, many of which do quite well in large containers.

Use window boxes and baskets on house and perimeter walls. If you compose your container elements carefully, you can have color in every season.

For the slightly more adventurous, set up a wooden frame or slats areas the top of the area and train some climbers across it, creating a shady haven.

You already know that herbs grow well in containers; some vegetable do quite well in containers and can provide fresh produce in addition the beauty they bring to your space.
