I think few gardeners would deny that a salad or meal containing homegrown produce picked that same day is one of the most satisfying dining and gardening experiences you can have. A productive garden needs a lot of work and attention but proves very rewarding.
You don’t have to go all-out from the start; select an area to start, and expand slowly as you have time and when you require more space.
No matter the garden size, you will want at least one compost pile, if not several. Using your garden for crops really uses up the nutrients in your soil quickly; mixing in a great deal of thoroughly composted organic matter will keep your soil in good shape and your plants producing.
Ideally, the productive garden would have a greenhouse, heated and wired for electricity. This is an expensive addition, but it does allow you to grow produce from seed and will extend your growing season. It also provides protection in the colder months.
Remember, start small and expand as you can, and you’ll soon be enjoying fresh herbs and produce all summer long.
