In the spring, you probably enjoy the burst of color your bulbs provide early in the growing season. Afterward, you have to watch the foliage yellow and wither while the other plants in your garden hit their summertime peak. There is a way to eliminate the yellowing bulb foliage after enjoying the flowering bulb’s blooms – plant your bulbs in a basket.

Take any small basket that has a number of holes in it (for aeration and drainage). Pond baskets are perfect for this.

Fill your basket to the halfway mark with garden soil (or soil-based mix). Set the bulbs into the soil, making sure that their points are facing upward. Top off the basket with more soil, filling it to the rim.

Dig a hole in your garden slightly larger than the basket. Place your basket in the hole, checking to see that the bulbs have been buring at the correct depth. Cover with garden soil and pat down to firm. Enjoy your Springtime blooms.

When flowering is over, use a spade or garden fork to pry the basket out of the ground. You should take care to not harm any of your other plants while doing this. Most of the bulbs’ roots should stay within the basket, and removing it should be an easy task. Now that you have removed the yellowing bulb foliage, enjoy your garden through the summer and fall.
