It’s exciting to plan a new garden. Resist the urge to jump in and start digging. A bit of research, a bit of inspiration, and a good deal of planning will yield great results in establishing your new garden.
Decide what you want from your garden. Are you planning to relax in a shady area? Do you want to grow herbs and vegetables? Will children use the garden for play?
Look at the existing space. Determine the sun exposure, and measure how long the shaded areas are without sun each day.
Are there features you want to add, or some that you want to remove from the existing setup? Make a list of each. When deciding what you’d like to add, don’t hold back; it is easier to trim the list down to a reasonable number of features that work well together and meet your needs.
Survey the land and make a rough scaled diagram. Include the major existing plants, structures and features. Then try to add the features and large plants to your diagram of the existing space, which will help you determine what your space can realistically accommodate.
Decide how much time you want to spend on garden maintenance. You will need to choose plants and features accordingly.
If all else fails, there are professional garden planners and landscapers that can help with any and all of the above steps, and help you move forward in creating the garden of your dreams.
