It isn’t easy always to select the right plant for the perfect location. These days, there are practically unlimited choices available to the home gardener. You might wish you could grab a pot or flat of the nearest plant at your local garden center and run home to plant it. Obviously this hit-or-miss approach will not result in a balanced border composition. Take a look at the area that is to be planted. Examine the plants in the surrounding beds, as the balance between your new border and the existing beds is as important as the balance and design of the planted border itself.
You can make the relationship peaceful, matched and soothing, or make a loud, brash and colorful statement. Either way, this result should be planned and not the result of haphazard plant selection. Read your gardening books and magazines, walk around your neighborhood and note which gardens appeal to you and what the appeal is, and go online to your local plant association’s website. These are all good sources of inspiration and also may help you narrow down your selection based on what thrives in your area. Resist succumbing to the pressure of the moment. You can fill border areas with colorful annuals for a season or two while you plan your long-term planting. Your patience and research will be rewarding with borders that enhance your property and are pleasing to the eye.
