Before you have fun decorating your new kitchen, pick the style, materials, appliances and features you want to add to your new kitchen.

Here are 6 tips to kick off a complete kitchen remodel.

1. List items you use often and which ones you don’t. Draw a cabinetry layout that puts regularly used items within easy reach,

2. Determine the ideal amount of space you want in your new kitchen and where it should be located. For example, a cutting area near the sink or trash can is helpful.

3. Create a logical traffic flow. Detour traffic between the back door and the rest of the house, away from the food preparation area, Do you entertain? If there’s a bottleneck between the dining area and the sink, washing dishes for a large dinner party will be challenging.

4. Keep kitchen lighting bright but not glaring. Pick a mix of overhead, hanging and undercabinet lighting.

5. Make the kitchen a friendlier place to hang out by incorporating an informal eating area around an island or peninsula.

6. Use the computer-aided design (CAD) software available at your local home center or kitchen specialty store to easily try out several design configurations. You can often get a price quote for each version, as well.

7. Go low tech. Move scaled-to-size pieces around on kitchen design templates until you achieve the most attractive and utilitarian configuration.

8. Test the swing of appliance doors. Make sure you can walk by while a dishwasher or oven door is open.
