How Far is too far? Until we are pushed to answer many of us are likely to shrug this type of generalized question away. Most Do It Yourselfers like digging in and getting dirty. With all the new advances in appliances and everything else around us today, is sometimes seems too hard to keep up with it all. If you are remodeling your home or building a new one, there are endless things to think about and make decisions on.
Who ever thought that going to the appliance store was going to take up so much time? Now your choices for a stove aren’t simply whether you want gas or electric, but if you want a gas 4 burner or 2 burner and a hot plate (and many other options) or an electric 4 burner hot plate or 4 burner flat top range. There are obviously many other choices that far exceed those above, but, now when you look into purchasing a refrigerator you have the choice of a top, bottom, or side freezer door, an ice maker or not, water and ice in the door, a tv, and now you can even choose whether or not you want to hook it up to the internet to diagnose any problems you might be having.

Manufacturers have been contemplating an internet refrigerator that has a bar code scanner built into the door. Every time a package is added, or removed from the refrigerator it keeps track of it. At the touch of a button you would know what was inside of the refrigerator. Do you really care what is inside of your refrigerator? What if your refrigerator could tell you if you were out of milk? There are some definite possibilities for disabled persons who may not be able to access the interior of the refrigerator but who could press a button on the touch screen to see what was needed.Access to this information would be be available via a computer screen on the outside of the door, that would tell you it’s time to buy more. What if you were able to push a touch pad on the computer screen and get a read out (or a printout) of all the contents? It would certainly make mom’s shopping easier. Depending on how the computer is configured, it could be very helpful in not only creating a grocery list but also housing a meal planner, recipes, timer, and many other great kitchen conveniences.
Perhaps this same computer if it were hooked into a service that delivers food to the home, could keep track the contents, and let you know when you have run out of something. Every week it could total your contents, connect itself to the Internet, and place an order with the grocery store. Later that day the delivery truck arrives with the list of items that you approved for delivery. A smart fridge, which in some ways may be a really great idea.
There are many possibilities in the future, and the possibilities are endless. Is RFID a part of the plan with the reading of the barcodes for these types of refrigerators? Will the scanner be in the door or will there be other methods used? It may just be that the shelves and drawers may be smart enough to tell what is on them. With RFID chips the refrigerator may also be able to tell you where in the refrigerator a particular item is or whether it is past its “Best By” freshness date.
