By following some simple guidelines you can safeguard your property and keep your family protected. By following these guidelines you can also lower your insurance premiums. Here is a useful checklist to help you examine your home room by room.

Keep candles away from bedding and curtains and anything flammable, limit extension cords and never put them under carpets, keep cords against the wall, install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, install window locks to keep intruders out and window guards to keep children from falling, keep a flashlight next to the bed in case of a power outage, keep bedroom and bathroom hallways clean to avoid falls.

Put a in front of your fireplace, keep flammable items away from the fireplace, install surge protectors, use non-skid backing under rugs to prevent slipping.

Check dishwasher hoses for loose connections, check the water line feeding the icemaker in your refrigerator to be make sure it is free of leaks, clean the range with soap and water to keep air flowing, test your ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets, seal around countertops and sinks to prevent mold from growing. Check toilet water lines and seals for leaks, look for discolored spots on walls and floors that may become plumbing leaks, keep all household cleaners, hair dyes, mouthwashes and poisonous products out of reach of children. Have a professional clean and check the heating and a/c system annually, be sure you know where the gas shutoff valve is located and how to use it, check hot water heaters for leaks and corrosion.

Keep a well written, video or photographic inventory of all your possessions. Keep the list and photos in a fireproof safe or outside of your home. Review your insurance policy and insurable items annually. Make sure a and emergency telephone numbers handy. Establish at least one escape route from your home and practice it with your family.
