Most of us want light and inviting rooms throughout our homes. If planned well, our homes can not only have Natural Light, in the main areas of our homes, but also in personal spaces, and still maintain continuity with the outside world.
When deciding what floor and house plan choose, most of us also incorporate what types of windows and doors we want to add to the central design elements of our home. Bringing in sunshine and natural light into rooms provides fresh air and views that transform enclosed areas into comfortable, inviting living spaces. Increasing natural light in the home to supplement or replace electrical lights, is becoming more important to homeowners as more of us become aware of energy consuming ways to help the environment.
Sunlight makes colors seem more intense, not muted. Properly placed and right-sized windows can do a lot for the personality of a home. Sunlight also creeps into corners and makes rooms feel bigger, airier, and fresh. With technological advances todays windows are larger, stronger and more energy efficient.
In addition, today’s manufacturing technologies allow homeowners to select windows and doors in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles. Glass technology has also advanced a great deal and now allows for more design and energy efficient windows. Achieving maximum natural lighting and energy efficiency depend in part on climate, where the windows are placed in the home, the home’s architecture and the landscaping surrounding it.
The sun’s rays are shaped into dramatic patterns and layers through the use of grilles, art glass and shaped windows and can have dramatic changes depending on the time of day and the room the natural light is coming in through. Rooms with multiple exposures can benefit from direct and indirect lighting that can create a feeling of warmth and spaciousness.
Skylights are a great way to add a diifferent lighting source into the home, and can be positioned to bring light to areas in a unique way, often complementing light from existing windows and doors. Skylights are perfect for bathrooms and kitchens.
