A well-thought-out, detailed plan is a must for any kitchen project. Whether you design the kitchen yourself, work with a home center, or go to a kitchen designer, formulating a plan is the first step in your remodel project.  There are three basic kitchen functions to consider and arrange to create an ideal kitchen: storage, preparation and clean-up.

Most older kitchen designs are based on three standard layouts: the U-shaped kitchen, the L-shaped kitchen and the galley kitchen.  In more recent times, designers have thought in terms of multiple work centers in the kitchen in order to allow more than one person to be able to work in the kitchen.  Adding an island is one of the most common ways to allow for another work center in a kitchen.  These types of stations can become major work centers if a second sink is added or the cooktop is pulled away from the wall and set into the island. Even without an island, you can create distinct work centers.

Choosing the right finish materials is another critical part of the process. Cabinets, counter tops, flooring, kitchen sinks, and other appliances should all be considered when formulating your plan.  Most home centers, appliance centers, and professional designers will have access to  that you can go and look at or use computer software to design your kitchen plans.
