What is DIY?

The term Do it yourself or is defined basically as a person or people creating things for themselves without the aid of paid professionals. DIY’s modern culture emphasizes that the solution to our needs is to not purchase things, but instead encourage people to take the project into their own hands to solve their own needs. In all actuality, DIY goes back through the ages. People have use their own skills and abilities and available tools to complete their own DIY Project. DIY and Remodeling or Renovation are all similar terms, other than remodeling and renovation are typically used when referring to a project that will be done with the aid of a professional. Renovation is the process of restoring or improving a structure. The process of a renovation includes: Planning, Engineering, Structural repair, Rebuilding, and Finishes.

The phrase “” is now a very common term. Most people use this term in referrence to fabricating or repairing things for home needs, on one’s own rather than purchasing them or paying for a professional repair the item. Basically the home improvement is done by the householder without the aid of paid professionals.

Big Box hardware stores have capitalized on the DIY home improvement scene today. In days gone by, DIY wasn’t the same thing, it used to be called personal involvement in home or apartment upkeep, or the making of clothing, or maintaining of cars, or anyother material part of every day life.

Common DIY home-improvement projects include: putting up shelves, painting and decorating, plumbing work: replacing washers, replacing sink, bath or basin taps or fitting an outside tap, fitting a shower, extending or installing central heating, decking, building an extension, extending or replacing electrical wiring, automotive repair: changing engine oil, changing spark plugs, fitting or replacing a car radio or audio system, Modifying or upgrading computer equipment, DIY audio/video equipment, building/restoring cars, boats or aircraft.

DIY or ‘Do-It-Yourself’ is also used to describe: Self-publishing books, zines, bands or solo artists releasing their music on self-funded record labels, creating crafts such as knitting, sewing, handmade jewelry, ceramics, etc., creating punk, indie, or hipster musical merchandise through the use of recycling thrift store or discarded materials, usually decorated with logo art.
