Decorating the home for the holidays is another way to show that you are environmentally friendly, by using products that don’t hurt the environment. Consumers can save money on their electricity bills by switching from traditional Christmas lights to (light-emitting diode) lights. L.E.D. lights last much longer, cost a lot less to operate, and are much more durable than conventional Christmas-light sets that frequently malfunction. There is also a different feel and look to LED lights.

If all conventional incandescent in the United States were replaced with L.E.D. lights the annual energy savings would total 2 billion kilowatt-hours - enough to power almost 200,000 homes for an entire year, according to the US Dept. of Energy. L.E.D. technology is expected to improve to the point where it can be used to light homes and offices all year round. L.E.D. technology has been around for decades, and L.E.D.s are steadily replacing light bulbs in a variety of devices.

Remember, the trash byproducts from the holidays can be recycled or reused in several ways. can be used as garden mulch, or many counties are now picking them up and recycling. Some municipalities make mulching equipment available to the public after the holiday season to reduce the number of trees going to the landfill or incinerator.

Consider decorating a live tree that can be planted outside after holidays. Trees are beneficial for the environment. Trees remove carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen. Many states have lists of live tree farms where you can purchase a tree for the holidays and then plant outside afterwards.
