When you decided to remodel your home, and design the interior yourself, you also decided that you wanted wood floors and tile. What you didn’t consider is how cold those floors were going to feel during the winter. Now, when you walk across that floor, your toes curl up from the chill, and you are seriously considering major back surgery to eliminate the sensation of cold that travels up your spine.
There is an alternative to cold floors. There is a component that can be added to the mix, it’s known as a “warm floor.” A warm floor is a type of radiant heating systemthat is reasonably simple to install and the addition of, can substantially improve your personal comfort on chilly days.
Radiant heating systems use a series of electric cables or small tubes of hot water that are embedded in a concrete floor; or embedded in the mortar or mastic beneath a tiled floor, beneath carpet; or attached to the underside of a wooden subfloor. Forced air heating circulates the air throughout the home, radiant heat warms objects such as tile, carpet hardwood and furniture. Tile is a preferred surface as it radiates the generated heat better than other types of flooring. Many people who have radiant heat say that it is a far more comfortable and even heat.
Radiant heating used in conjunction with forced air can lower the heating costs because you will not be constantly turning your thermostat up and down to moderate changes in air temperature. Not to mention the increased comfort level.
