What can be more luxurious or romantic than soaking in an antique clawfoot bathtub bathed in soft candlelight? Remodeling your cold, hard-edged modern bathroom to one that harks back to a simpler time is a beautiful idea. One that can be done, but many people don’t know how to go about remodeling their bathroom with antique plumbing fixtures. It’s not always as simple as popping down to the local big box chain store and picking out antique Victorian fixtures.
There are a couple of ways you can go when you are about to embark on a bathroom remodel, especially if you want to fill the room with antiques. You can travel around your state and neighboring states, scouring for antique plumbing and light fixtures. You can also search the Internet for dealers in antique plumbing fixtures, like The Old House Parts Company whose focus is on 18′th, 19′th and early 20′th century restoration and home improvement architectural salvage and architectural antiques.
Another option is to purchase antique replica fixtures. They are made with modern equipment, but are fashioned to represent an era gone by. A great example of antique replica plumbing fixtures is Mac the Antique Plumber. Mac specializes in antique plumbing fixtures and plumbing hardware that are visually authentic reproductions of designs from the early days of indoor plumbing with today’s mechanical workings.
It is hard to say which route will be the less expensive or easier. Sometimes, knowing that you searched for every piece in your bathroom remodel yourself can be very fulfilling and some of your best “finds” may have only cost a few dollars. But, this way will take a lot more effort and time. While companies that deal in antique replicas will have catalogs and showrooms where all of the pieces can be ordered and purchased at once. They may even offer installation.
Either way, bathroom remodeling can be very satisfying when you see the completed room and it truly is a luxurious and romantic room to be in.
