Landscaping incorporates many things. Of course, there are plants, gravel, peat moss, fertilizer and tons and tons of dirt, but one of the most versatile items in a garden or landscape is good old cement. Decorative cement, cement treatments and cement hardscapes can be used in many applications around your home.
Let’s look at cement as a decorative element in your garden. You may know someone with a garden gnome in their yard, but decorative cement is so much more than gnomes, frogs and lawn jockeys. Decorative cement birdbaths and fountains are just the beginning to enhancing your landscaping. Shallow troughs as a cement hardscape can be used to grow an abundance of low, overflowing plants. Having an assortment of them scattered throughout your yard, under trees and next to benches and statues, will add that eye-appealing element to any landscape.

Other cement hardscape ideas include using cement that has been dyed and shaped to form interesting, meandering paths that take the stroller through different parts of the garden. Paths can be shaped to resemble bricks, cobblestones and even natural rock. Use decorative cement to form individual stepping stones, where each step contains what looks to be an ancient fossil.
Cement treatments like staining and etching can also be used on patios, driveways and walkways, the designs of which are only limited by your imagination. Picture a patio that resembles a solid, rich piece of mahogany or a path that looks as if it is made of pure marble. So, when you plan your landscaping, get an assortment of plants, dirt and fertilizer but don’t forget to stock up on lots of cement.
