Just because the weather is getting cooler does not mean that your garden is finished producing for the season. There are many fall weather plantsthat would wither and die in the hot, dry summer months, but flourish when there is a little nip in the air. Your fall harvest can give you a variety of fall weather plants that are unexpected.
Many green, leafy plants are great for your fall garden. Plants like collard and mustard greens and kale, spinach and lettuce love the shorter sunlight hours and cooler temperatures. These leafy greens are best when planted in rows close to each other. But beware of critters getting into your garden. These fall weather plants will entice them even more than the plants from your summer garden. Keep your fall gardenenclosed in rabbit-proof fencing.
Other plants that you started in the summer like pumpkin and summer and winter squash will really take off now that it has begun to cool off. And even though you may have already harvested all of your carrots, turnips and beets, these root crops can do just as well in the fall and you should plant another batch for your fall garden.
When planning your fall gardening, don’t forget about broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and cabbage. They can produce a magnificent crop in your fall garden. In addition to all of those mentioned, many herb plants can also do well in the fall garden. Keep these in mind and be sure to plant different herbs throughout your garden. They can be used for cooking as they continue to grow all the way until the first frost. And they add a delicious aroma to your garden as well as attract good insects and repel destructive ones.
