Along with having smoke alarms installed on every level of your home and at least one fire extinguisher in your kitchen, every family should conduct occasional home fire safety assessments to review other items like fire escape routes and proper storage of flammable liquids.
A home fire safety assessment is a series of questionnaires and information on all aspects of fire safety in your home. It goes over items such as what, if any, supplemental heating equipment you have in your home. How units such as electric space heaters and kerosene heaters bring with them their own dangers. A home fire safety assessment will go over all of the safety recommendationsto employ while using these types of heating equipment.
A standard home fire safety assessment will also inform you of the different types of clothing and mattress materials such as nylon, polyester and acrylic that resists bursting into flame better than natural fabric like cotton and rayon.

Flammable liquids such as paint thinner and contact cement and lighter fluid should never be stored near any appliance with an open flame, which includes gas water heaters, dryers and furnaces.
Many fire departments around the country will also offer a service where they will come to your home or business and conduct a fire safety assessment. Check with your local fire department to see if they can schedule your home for an appointment. If they do not offer this service, they can usually send you a small workbook, where you can conduct your own home fire safety assessment.
